EGA South Africa and the challenge of recovering a PV manufacturing plant
EGA South Africa is an emerging player in the local renewable energy sector, focused on developing domestic photovoltaic manufacturing capabilities to support the country’s energy transition and industrial growth.
At the time of Ecoprogetti’s involvement, the PV manufacturing plant had already been installed by a different equipment supplier. However, the initial supply did not pass the Site Acceptance Test (SAT) and failed to meet the expectations of a fully integrated turnkey solution. The production line consisted of heterogeneous equipment sourced from multiple suppliers, with limited integration and no single accountable manufacturer responsible for overall performance.
This resulted in significant inefficiencies, poor coordination between processes, and a system that was unable to deliver PV modules at the expected production levels—falling far short of target output.
The customer was therefore facing major operational challenges. Technical issues, process inefficiencies, and overall instability were affecting performance, productivity, and the long-term sustainability of the investment.
A Project Rescue strategy focused on performance and reliability
Addressing such a situation required more than a standard intervention. It called for a comprehensive analysis, a structured strategy, and strong execution capabilities.
Ecoprogetti’s team acted with a clear objective: to recover, optimize, and relaunch the plant—restoring high standards of reliability and efficiency while minimizing additional investments and costs for the stakeholders.
The key phases of the PV production line revamping
The project was executed through several key phases:
- Detailed technical assessment and identification of critical issues
- Targeted actions to eliminate bottlenecks and improve production flow
- Supply of advanced testing equipment for quality control, including ECOSUN NOVA and ECOLAB
- Supply of an automatic interconnection machine (ECOBUSSING)
- Full revamping of the production line with a focus on performance and stability
- Continuous on-site services during installation and restart phases
- Comprehensive IEC certification support, including in-house certification for PV “golden modules” production and factory inspection assistance
Each phase was driven by a practical, results-oriented approach—aimed not only at resolving existing issues or supplying new equipment, but at building a more robust and efficient system than the original configuration.
From plant recovery to successful PV module production
Today, the plant is fully installed and successfully operational. Performance has been restored and enhanced, ensuring production continuity, improved efficiency, and a solid foundation for future growth.
This project goes beyond a simple technical fix: it represents the restoration of value and the successful transformation of a critical situation into a concrete opportunity for relaunch, investment recovery, and risk mitigation.
Laura Sartore: the value of a Project Rescue
“A Project Rescue is not simply about fixing a problem,” says Laura Sartore, CEO of Ecoprogetti. “It means stepping into a critical situation, restoring control and performance, and delivering tangible value back to the client and investors. We act as true partners to our customers, taking responsibility for daily production—regardless of whether the equipment comes from Ecoprogetti or third parties. What truly matters is ensuring continuous output of high-quality PV modules, and this is what we consistently guarantee as a turnkey line provider and PV process expert.”
Why system integration matters in photovoltaic manufacturing
Situations like this highlight a critical aspect of photovoltaic manufacturing investments: relying on “non-manufacturing intermediaries”, “used-machine dealers”, or fragmented traders and suppliers can introduce significant risks—especially when system integration, quality compliance, and long-term support are not fully ensured.
A photovoltaic production line is not simply a collection of machines, but a complex, interdependent system that requires a single, experienced partner capable of guaranteeing performance, reliability, and continuity.
A foundation for the next expansion phase
Ecoprogetti is proud to have supported EGA South Africa throughout this journey, contributing to bringing the plant back to performance levels aligned with expectations, and looks forward to supporting its next factory expansion phase.
From critical to operational. From risk to value. From challenge to success.
This is the Ecoprogetti approach.
